Matt Damon Shocked Robert Pattinson on ‘The Odyssey’ Set by ‘Screaming and Screaming’ to Blow His Voice Out and Sound Older: ‘A Complete Psycho’

Variety · 4 hours ago

Matt Damon deliberately damaged his voice on the set of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" by repeatedly screaming in his trailer, in order to sound older and more battle-worn as the character Odysseus. Co-stars Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland, working nearby, were initially alarmed by the noises, unsure whether Damon was in distress or having an argument, before learning it was a deliberate acting technique. The anecdote highlights the extreme physical preparation Damon undertook for the role.

Pattinson described the experience in an MTV UK interview, recalling that he thought Damon was "a complete psycho" having "a really bad toilet experience" before realising he was intentionally straining his voice, joking that Damon was "taking years off" his life. Damon also transformed physically for the part, cutting his weight to 167 pounds (down from his usual 185–200) through strict dieting and training, a stark contrast to the 30 pounds he gained for 2009's "The Informant." "The Odyssey" is released in cinemas on 17 July via Universal Pictures.
