Motherwell’s Watt gets four-game ban for ‘worst VAR decision in history’ comment

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Motherwell midfielder Elliot Watt has been handed an immediate four-match ban after admitting a breach of Scottish FA disciplinary rules over comments he made on X following his side's 3-2 defeat by Celtic in May, in which he branded a late penalty decision "the worst VAR decision in history". The case is part of wider fallout from that controversial call, which also saw then-Hearts boss Derek McInnes cited for calling the same decision "disgusting", with his hearing due on 22 July, underlining ongoing tension between Scottish clubs and refereeing authorities over VAR calls.

The penalty, converted by Kelechi Iheanacho after Sam Nicholson was ruled to have handled the ball, helped Celtic secure the win at Fir Park on 13 May and was later confirmed as the correct call by SFA head of refereeing Willie Collum. Motherwell were also fined £5,000 for a related social media post and video, a decision the club say they are "extremely disappointed" with and are seeking written reasons on before consulting solicitors. Because Watt was also sent off in Motherwell's final league game of the season, he faces a five-match domestic ban overall, though he remains available for the club's Conference League qualifiers against Havnar Boltfelag on 23 and 30 July; the PFA team-of-the-year midfielder has also been linked with a transfer to Turkish side Samsunspor.
