## Key points

- “Cow tools” confused readers who searched for a deeper meaning.
- The article selects ten cow-themed comics from the strip.

## Summary

A new selection of ten of Gary Larson’s funniest cow-themed Far Side comics highlights how often the cartoonist returned to cows during the strip’s 15-year run. The article says cows suited Larson’s surreal humour, which mixed everyday behaviour with role reversals and absurd situations.

Larson created 4,337 Far Side comics from 1980 to 1995, and once said he found the word “cow” funny and saw cows as figures that blur tragedy and humour. One featured strip, “Cow tools”, drew confused letters from readers; Larson clarified the next day that its joke was simply that cows would make crude tools. The selection also includes gags about cows eating grass and reversing familiar human and farmyard roles.
