Two people were sentenced after making threats against Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina, highlighting continuing concerns about violence and intimidation directed at elected officials. Shayla Addison received a federal prison sentence for threatening Mace, while Samuel Theodore Cain received house arrest and probation under South Carolina law.

Addison, 28, was sentenced in Indiana to 27 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to two counts of threatening a federal official; prosecutors said she sent violent messages to Mace’s campaign contacts in January 2025. Cain was given a five-year sentence suspended in favour of 30 months’ house arrest and five years’ probation after threatening online to assassinate Mace; she said the incidents had led to heightened security measures. US Capitol Police investigated nearly 15,000 concerning communications and behaviours involving Congress in the previous year, a rise of about 58 per cent.
