ABC’s long-running newsmagazine 20/20 returns for its 49th season on 25 September with “The Salem Strangler”, examining the unsolved 1986 murder of college student Claire Gravel. The episode explores how a similar attack in 2007 generated new leads and renewed efforts to identify Gravel’s killer.

Gravel was found strangled beside a road six miles from her Salem, Massachusetts, home after her family reported her missing when she failed to attend work. The programme includes interviews with her family, the surviving 2007 victim and investigators, while Deborah Roberts speaks to Gravel’s brother about the initial search. 20/20 was reportedly the most-watched Friday newsmagazine in the 2025–26 season, attracting more than 3.7 million viewers and leading Dateline for a fourth consecutive year.
