## Key points

- The Host turns 20 with a 4K restoration and cinema return.
- Bong says teenage pressure and Loch Ness lore inspired its monster.
- Two of his five developing film ideas could be horror.

## Summary

Bong Joon-ho says the imagined Han River monster that inspired The Host grew from his teenage interest in the Loch Ness monster and the pressure of Korean high school, rather than an actual sighting. The film turns 20 this year, and its 4K restoration and return to cinemas have prompted the director to reflect on how it was made and what may come next.

The restoration aimed to recreate the look of a high-quality 35-millimetre print, with no digital changes to the film or its monster. Bong says he is developing five film ideas, two of which could be classed as horror; his upcoming animated feature, Ally, is not a horror film but shares a connection with The Host.
