## Key points

- Iroh asks Zuko to question who he is and what he wants.
- Zuko releases Appa and abandons his Blue Spirit mask.
- The scene marks a turn away from his father’s expectations.

## Summary

The article argues that Uncle Iroh’s question to Zuko, “Who are you, and what do you want?”, remains one of the most powerful lines in *Avatar: The Last Airbender*. In the “Lake Laogai” episode, Iroh challenges Zuko as he tries to capture Appa and reclaim his family’s honour, prompting him to reconsider the identity and destiny imposed on him by his father.

Zuko has spent years chasing the Avatar to regain his title after Fire Lord Ozai banished and scarred him. Living in Ba Sing Se gives him a chance to imagine another life, but he falls back into old habits when he learns Appa is imprisoned. After Iroh’s confrontation, Zuko releases Appa and drops his Blue Spirit mask into the water; the following episode’s fever is presented as a physical sign of the upheaval involved in breaking from his father’s influence.
