2026 Emmy Nominations Analysis: What to Make of the ‘Widow’s Bay’ Surge, Taylor Sheridan Rejection and ‘Amazing Race’ Disappearance
The US Television Academy has announced the nominees for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, unveiling finalists across more than 100 categories as chosen by 27,000 voters. Executive Editor of Awards Scott Feinberg analyses the picks for clues ahead of final voting (17-26 August), the Creative Arts ceremonies (5-6 September) and the Primetime telecast (14 September on NBC). The nominations matter as an early indicator of momentum before the awards are decided.
HBO/HBO Max led all platforms with 122 nominations, followed by Netflix on 111, with both securing nods in the drama, comedy and limited/anthology categories. Apple TV, despite a lower company-record total of 87, made a strong showing in the major races, taking three of eight slots in both drama and comedy. The rookie horror-comedy Widow's Bay surged late to land 19 nominations, behind only The Pitt (a field-leading 25) and Hacks (a record-breaking 24). Elsewhere, presenter and telecast host Mariska Hargitay was nominated for her HBO documentary My Mom Jayne, the final seasons of The Boys, Euphoria and Stranger Things missed the best drama cut, and voters again snubbed Taylor Sheridan's Paramount+ shows, including Landman.
