## Key points

- Democrats’ midterm win puts pressure on Trump’s agenda.
- Moscow says it hopes his Ukraine peace efforts continue.
- The effect on US policy towards Russia remains uncertain.

## Summary

The Kremlin says it hopes Donald Trump will continue pursuing a diplomatic settlement to the war in Ukraine after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections. The result weakens Trump’s position at home and could complicate his foreign policy, though Russia has publicly avoided treating it as a change in who directs US diplomacy.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Trump remained in office and Moscow “sincerely” hoped he would carry on his peacemaking efforts. The article notes that the incoming Democratic majority may press for more US military aid to Kyiv, renewed transatlantic unity on Ukraine and further sanctions on Russia, while some analysts suggest Trump could respond to domestic constraints by stepping up diplomacy. citeturn0search0turn0search1
