Volvo has unveiled updated 2028 versions of its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid SUVs, more than doubling their all-electric range as the brand hedges between combustion and electrification amid economic uncertainty. The upgrade makes the models significantly more practical for daily driving without plugging in, while the company continues to offer non-plug-in mild-hybrid variants for buyers who don't want a chargeable car.

The five-seat XC60 now covers 78 miles on electric power alone (up from 35) and 590 miles total with a full charge and tank of petrol, while the larger, three-row XC90 manages 73 electric miles and 560 miles combined. Both retain the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 455-horsepower output as before, but pair it with a bigger 41.2-kWh battery, and both are quick, with the XC60 hitting 60mph in 4.5 seconds. Beyond range, the XC60 gains an extra radar sensor, upgraded 360-degree cameras and a new processor enabling automatic highway lane-change assistance and future over-the-air updates, alongside an 11.2-inch Google-and-Gemini-powered display, a retained volume knob, and subtly revised exterior styling.
