## Key points

- Buffy saves Dawn by sacrificing her own life.
- Her final words frame living as an act of bravery.
- Season five was written as a possible series finale.

## Summary

The season five finale of *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* ends with Buffy giving her life to close a dangerous portal and save her sister, Dawn. Before she jumps, Buffy tells Dawn, “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me.” The article argues that the line remains inspiring because it frames survival as an act of courage.

The finale brings Buffy and Dawn’s relationship from reluctant siblings to a bond of deep care, as Buffy becomes Dawn’s protector and caregiver. Buffy chooses to sacrifice herself rather than let Dawn die, giving new meaning to the season’s idea that death is the Slayer’s “gift”. At the time, season five was intended as a possible series ending: the show was leaving The WB, and its future on UPN was uncertain.
