American Songwriter has compiled a short feature highlighting three well-known songs from the 1990s that were reportedly inspired by the songwriters' own real-life romantic entanglements rather than fiction. The piece draws on interviews the artists gave to outlets including The Independent, Rolling Stone and Songfacts to explain the personal circumstances behind each track, offering fans some behind-the-scenes context for tracks that remain radio staples decades later.

The three songs featured are No Doubt's "Don't Speak", which partly chronicles singer Gwen Stefani's breakup with bandmate Tony Kanal; The Cranberries' "Linger", whose lyrics Dolores O'Riordan wrote based on a romance with a 17-year-old soldier; and Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy", written by guitarist Doug Hopkins about wanting to reconcile with an ex, with a lyric change from "drink" to "think" made to tone down references to alcohol — notable given Hopkins was later dismissed from the band due to his alcoholism.
