The 1996 adventure thriller The Ghost and the Darkness has arrived on Paramount+ from 1 September 2026, giving the long-overlooked survival film a new streaming home three decades after its release. Directed by Stephen Hopkins and written by William Goldman, the film dramatises the real-life story of two lions that killed railway workers building a bridge in Tsavo, Kenya, in the late 19th century, blending historical drama with creature-feature horror as a big-game hunter and a construction engineer are forced to confront the seemingly unstoppable predators.

The film stars Val Kilmer as engineer John Henry Patterson and Michael Douglas as hunter Charles Remington, alongside Tom Wilkinson, Emily Mortimer, Bernard Hill and Om Puri. It received mixed reviews from critics (a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes) but proved more popular with audiences (75%), and it won the Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing while grossing around $75 million worldwide. The preserved remains of the real Tsavo lions are now on display at Chicago's Field Museum.
