34 Years Later, the Wildest Crime Thriller of All Time Is Officially Back to Complete the Trilogy
The Bad Lieutenant franchise is expanding with a Tokyo-set entry directed by acclaimed filmmaker Takashi Miike, known for provocative crime and horror work. The film follows a disgraced detective spiralling into corruption and violence whilst investigating a case involving yakuza figures and a missing American's daughter, starring Shun Oguri and Lily James.
This third installment continues an unusual model established by the 1992 original (Abel Ferrara, Harvey Keitel) and 2009's Port of Call New Orleans (Werner Herzog, Nicolas Cage). Rather than traditional sequels, each film is a standalone production by different auteurs, sharing only the central concept of a morally compromised police officer. Producer Edward R. Pressman owns the rights and has announced further sequels planned across multiple countries with local directors and production teams.
