Royal Opera revival gives Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis a stark operatic voice

The Guardian ·

The Royal Opera’s revival of Philip Venables’ opera *4.48 Psychosis* turns Sarah Kane’s final play into a stark, musically complex account of depression and isolation. The review praises its forceful performances and vivid score, while noting that the music sometimes directs the audience’s emotions and softens the play’s capacity to shock.

Venables’ opera, commissioned by the Royal Opera and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, premiered in 2016 and sets most of Kane’s fragmented text across 24 sections. Six singers perform with the 14-piece Chroma Ensemble, conducted by Naomi Woo, in Ted Huffman’s revived production at London’s Linbury Theatre, running until 25 October. Jacquelyn Stucker is singled out for her moving portrayal of the troubled protagonist.

  • A striking opera adaptation of Sarah Kane’s final play.
  • Six singers and a 14-piece ensemble bring its fractured score to life.
  • The revival runs at London’s Linbury Theatre until 25 October.
