## Key points

- Four celebrated 1967 songs peaked at No. 2.
- Strong chart competition kept each from reaching the top.
- Their lasting reputations outlived their chart peaks.

## Summary

Four well-known songs released in 1967 reached No. 2 on the US pop chart but never topped it. Their near misses show how strong the competition was that year, even for tracks that have since become enduring favourites.

The songs were The Mamas & The Papas’ “Dedicated To The One I Love”, Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, The Association’s “Never My Love” and Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man”. Their respective No. 1 chart rivals were “Happy Together” by The Turtles, “To Sir With Love” by Lulu, and, for the two other tracks, the article gives no rival titles.
