## Key points

- Anson Mount helped make Captain Pike a major *Star Trek* figure.
- Pike’s defining quote is about shaping the future through choices.
- The line echoes the franchise’s faith in humanity’s capacity to improve.

## Summary

An essay argues that Captain Christopher Pike’s line, “Until our last moment, the future is what we make it”, remains an especially inspiring science-fiction quote. Anson Mount’s portrayal in *Star Trek: Discovery* and *Strange New Worlds* helped turn Pike from a minor figure in the franchise’s history into a compelling leader.

The line comes in the *Strange New Worlds* premiere, when Pike addresses two factions on Kiley 279 as they prepare for war using technology derived from a Federation battle. He explains how humanity nearly destroyed itself in World War III, then urges the planet’s leaders to shape a better future. The essay links his message to *Star Trek*’s longstanding optimism: progress is difficult, but people’s choices can change what comes next.
