Willie Nelson’s “Yesterday’s Wine”, initially a commercial disappointment in 1971, became a number-one country hit when George Jones and Merle Haggard recorded it as a duet on 7 August 1982. The success highlighted the song’s later critical standing and launched the pair’s first collaborative album, A Taste of Yesterday’s Wine.

Jones and Haggard’s version spent 10 weeks on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, including one week at number one, whereas Nelson’s original had reached only number 62. The two singers had known each other since meeting in Bakersfield in 1961 and reunited for a second, partly collaborative album in 2006; it was Jones’s final album before his death in 2013, while Haggard died in 2016.
