## Key points

- Five fantasy novels bring fairy tale magic to adult readers.
- The stories span romance, folklore and found family.
- Several draw on classic tales or continue across series.

## Summary

The article recommends five adult fantasy novels that use fairy tale themes, arguing that the genre’s magic, romance and moral courage can appeal well beyond childhood. The books offer alternatives to sprawling political fantasy, with stories centred on wondrous settings, unlikely bonds and characters finding a way to do what is right.

The examples include Erin Morgenstern’s duelling magicians at a travelling circus; Helene Wecker’s golem and jinni in 19th-century New York; and Naomi Novik’s retelling of Rumpelstiltskin in the kingdom of Lithvas. It also highlights TJ Klune’s queer romance about a lonely official who finds family among magical children, and Brandon Sanderson’s *Tress of the Emerald Sea*, inspired by *The Princess Bride*. Wecker’s series concluded with *The Gates of Midnight*, while Klune continued his story in *Somewhere Beyond the Sea*.
