## Summary

A ranked selection of five science fiction books examines stories designed to unsettle familiar ideas about intelligence, consciousness and humanity’s place in the universe. The article argues that these novels use speculative science to push readers to question assumptions, from what counts as communication to whether self-awareness is essential.

The excerpts describe Stanisław Lem’s *Solaris*, where a living ocean creates figures drawn from researchers’ memories, and Peter Watts’s *Blindsight*, where intelligent aliens may function without consciousness. The article also introduces *The Three-Body Problem*, set against China’s Cultural Revolution, with a planetary system threatened by three suns. It frames the books as thought-provoking challenges to human-centred views of intelligence and evolution.
