The film documented what became the final performance featuring all five original members of The Band, complemented by an impressive roster of musical guests spanning rock history. Its theatrical production values and cultural resonance have spawned numerous tribute recreations by musicians across subsequent decades.

Yet the film's reputation masks significant controversies regarding its authenticity and editorial choices. In his memoir, drummer Levon Helm condemned the final cut as fundamentally misleading, arguing that production decisions unfairly emphasised guitarist Robbie Robertson's prominence whilst rendering vocalist Richard Manuel nearly invisible. Producer John Simon later disclosed that the vast majority of the soundtrack was actually re-recorded in studios months after the concert concluded, with only Helm's drumming and one vocal performance genuinely captured during the original live event.
