## Key points

- The article picks six thriller trilogies that sustain their appeal.
- The selections cover crime, espionage, horror and revenge.
- Some trilogies connect through themes rather than shared plots.

## Summary

The article argues that thrillers rarely sustain suspense and quality across a trilogy, but highlights six series it considers successful. These films span espionage, crime, psychological horror and revenge, showing how different stories can maintain a strong identity across multiple instalments.

Among the examples described are Sweden’s three Millennium adaptations, released in one year and centred on journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander; Hong Kong’s Infernal Affairs trilogy, which follows undercover agents and expands the story through a prequel and an aftermath; and the Anthony Hopkins Hannibal Lecter films, including The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Red Dragon. Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance trilogy is also included: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance share themes of revenge and its consequences rather than characters or plot.
