## Key points

- The ranking focuses on suspense throughout the mystery.
- *Rear Window* builds tension through Jeff’s limited viewpoint.
- *Vertigo* uses dramatic irony to keep viewers guessing.

## Summary

The article ranks six mystery films for how effectively they keep audiences involved in working out whom to trust and which clues matter. It argues that the excitement comes not only from the final reveal but from the suspenseful journey towards it, often rewarding a second viewing.

The supplied text discusses Alfred Hitchcock’s *Rear Window* and *Vertigo*. In *Rear Window*, photographer Jeff Jefferies suspects his neighbour has killed his wife, while the audience is restricted to what Jeff can see and hear from his apartment. *Vertigo* follows former detective Scottie Ferguson as he investigates Madeleine’s strange behaviour; the article says its suspense grows from viewers learning information Scottie does not know.
