American Songwriter has compiled a list marking the 60th anniversary of six standout country songs released in 1966, a year it credits with producing some of the genre's most enduring classics despite the era being dominated in popular memory by rock and psychedelia. The feature highlights the lasting influence of artists such as Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and George Jones, whose songs remain touchstones for country fans decades on.

The selections include Loretta Lynn's confrontational "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)," Merle Haggard's chart-hitting "The Bottle Let Me Down" (No. 3 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs), and Buck Owens's "Think Of Me," which spent five months on the country charts. Also featured are Jack Greene's award-winning "There Goes My Everything," which crossed over to No. 65 on the Hot 100 and won Country Music Association honours, Nat Stuckey's Top 5 hit "Sweet Thang," and George Jones's quirky novelty track "I'm A People."
