## Key points

- Spy fiction can still surprise readers.
- The recommended books complicate the idea of a clear-cut hero.
- Ambler and le Carré offer contrasting entry points.

## Summary

The article argues that spy fiction still has plenty to offer despite familiar clichés, with books that question who deserves readers’ sympathy, make room for flawed protagonists and mix intrigue with humour. It recommends seven novels as an entry point for beginners.

Among the books discussed are Eric Ambler’s *The Mask of Dimitrios*, whose amateur investigator is capable but often outmatched, and John le Carré’s *The Spy Who Came in from the Cold*, which complicates the divide between hero and enemy. The article presents these works as examples of spy stories that challenge expectations rather than relying on superhuman agents.
