Collider has compiled a list of mystery novels it considers "perfect from start to finish" — books that combine a fair puzzle, vivid setting and a satisfying, logical resolution. The selection spans classic and modern detective fiction, chosen for how well pacing, characters and plotting come together, with several entries having also inspired acclaimed film adaptations.

Among the titles discussed are three landmark works: Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles", which revived Sherlock Holmes after his apparent death and is praised for its gothic, moor-set atmosphere; Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon", credited with defining hardboiled detective fiction through anti-hero Sam Spade; and Agatha Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd", featuring Hercule Poirot in a plot widely regarded as one of crime fiction's most groundbreaking.
