Netflix has reconfirmed that its long-gestating animated Magic: The Gathering series is still moving forward, listing the show as "upcoming" in a recent press release touting its animation slate. The project has had a troubled history spanning seven years, having been announced, recast, written, recorded and cancelled before being revived, so this fresh confirmation offers the clearest sign yet that it remains alive despite years of stalled progress.

The series was first announced in 2019 with Joe and Anthony Russo producing, with Brandon Routh cast as its lead in 2021. It was fully written and recorded but axed in 2024 amid a wider cull of Netflix animated projects, before being revived later that year under Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas, with no further updates until now. Separately, a Magic: The Gathering film has also been in development for over a decade, with Matt Johnson last reported as director. Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro-owned publisher behind the card game, says Magic generates around $1 billion in annual revenue and has roughly 50 million players worldwide.
