## Key points

- Eight thrillers are praised for sustained tension.
- The examples include *Speed* and *Sicario*.
- Danger and character choices drive the action.

## Summary

The article selects eight action thrillers that it considers consistently gripping, arguing that the strongest films make danger feel immediate and give each chase or fight meaningful consequences. Across the selection, characters face escalating threats that test their judgement, loyalties and chances of survival.

The supplied text describes *Speed*, *The Bourne Ultimatum*, *Sicario* and *The Raid*. In *Speed*, a bus must stay above 50 miles per hour to avoid exploding; *The Bourne Ultimatum* follows Jason Bourne as he investigates the CIA programme behind his past; *Sicario* centres on an FBI agent confronting a covert border task force; and *The Raid* traps officers in a crime-controlled Jakarta apartment block. The article’s text ends partway through its account of *The Raid*, so the other four films are not identified here.
