## Key points

- New book traces WTC debris's journey to all 50 US states
- 95% of steel, 200,000+ tons, was recycled abroad within a year
- Remaining pieces became memorials at churches, firehouses and universities

## Summary

A new book, *Scattered Steel: The Afterlife of the WTC* by Samuel Holleran and Max Holleran, traces what became of the nearly two million tons of debris cleared from Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks, revealing that fragments were dispersed to all 50 US states and beyond. Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the attacks, it offers the most detailed account yet of the steel and rubble's journey from disaster site to memorials, churches and even scrapyards abroad, giving fresh historical depth to the anniversary's wider commemorations.

The authors describe how debris was trucked out within hours to Staten Island's Fresh Kills landfill and to New Jersey scrapyards, where FBI agents and archaeologists hand-searched material for human remains. Around 95 per cent of the steel, more than 200,000 tons, was ultimately sold to scrap wholesalers in India, China and Turkey, some of them unaware of its origin, and recycled into rebar, cladding and even cookware within a year. The remaining pieces were stored for nearly a decade at JFK Airport's Hangar 17 before being distributed to churches, fire houses, police departments and memorial sites, including a fragment placed at Manhattan's Church of Saint Francis of Assisi and a W-shaped beam from the Twin Towers' arches now at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
