A bug in Discord’s safety systems incorrectly banned accounts since May
Discord has admitted that a bug in its automated moderation systems incorrectly banned user accounts over a roughly two-month period. The company's support team explained on X that the fault caused legitimate accounts to be permanently banned rather than merely having their uploads paused, affecting people who had done nothing wrong. It matters because the error stemmed from Discord's child safety systems mistakenly flagging harmless images as child sexual abuse material, and the bug then prevented reviewers from lifting the wrongful bans.
Around 200 accounts were caught by the issue over the weekend, but Discord estimates roughly 8,200 accounts may have been affected since May 2026. The trigger appears to have been square grid images — such as spreadsheets, chessboards or the Minecraft inventory menu — which Discord's AI tools compare against known harmful material. Normally, flagged accounts are reviewed by a human on the Trust & Safety team and uploads are only temporarily paused, but the bug both imposed a full ban and stopped it being reversed once staff cleared the account. Discord says affected accounts should now be reinstated and that it is building better safeguards.
