Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce a medical thriller storyline in its second and final season, according to actor Robert Picardo, who plays the Doctor. Speaking to ScreenRant after a San Diego Comic-Con panel, Picardo said the episode would centre on his character and Klingon cadet Jay-Den Kragg as they work together to save lives, marking a genre shift for the show as it wraps up its run. The move continues a long-standing Star Trek tradition of using different genres, such as horror, musicals and murder mysteries, to develop characters across the franchise.

Picardo described the storyline as a "big medical disaster thriller" that deepens the mentoring relationship between the Doctor and Jay-Den, a Klingon who aspires to be a healer rather than a warrior. He also said the second season would improve on the first, which received mixed reviews and was review-bombed by some fans. The season will also introduce a new cadet character, continuing a pattern seen in series such as Strange New Worlds, The Next Generation and The Original Series, which have all used genre experimentation to explore their characters.
