Modders have revived Evolve, a 2015 asymmetrical multiplayer shooter from Turtle Rock Studios, the team behind Left 4 Dead, by building a free downloadable launcher with working multiplayer more than a decade after its release. The revival matters because Evolve was an ambitious attempt to expand the co-op survival formula pioneered by Left 4 Dead into a 4-vs-1 format, an idea that later influenced hits such as Dead by Daylight, and its return gives players a chance to experience that design again outside official support.

Evolve pitted four Hunters, split into Assault, Trapper, Medic and Support roles, against a single player controlling a monster that could hunt wildlife, grow stronger and evolve into a powerful final form. The game scored 76 on Metacritic, with critics praising its inventive structure but flagging issues around longevity, progression and matchmaking, including Polygon's own 2015 review, which called it "something different" without fully realising its potential. The revival, led by modder SnoreDollar and the Evolve Modded/Archive community, is available via Discord, and its "Classic Plus" version is said to be more welcoming to new and casual players than the original release.
