## Key points

- Democrats are poised to take full control of Congress.
- The party made gains in Texas and traditionally Republican communities.
- Voters’ priorities will test Democrats’ ability to hold their new coalition.

## Summary

Democrats appear poised for a sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, potentially taking full control of Congress and winning state races including the Texas governorship. The results signal a sharp rejection of Donald Trump’s party and could reshape American politics, though the article cautions that the electorate remains unsettled and neither party can assume any group or state is secure.

The article says Democrats regained voters they lost in 2024, including Latino voters, and made gains in rural and working-class communities that have leaned Republican. It highlights historic wins and candidacies, including Georgia’s first Black woman governor and New Hampshire’s first openly gay senator, while Michigan’s would-be first Muslim senator was leading at the time of writing. A larger House majority could make governing easier for Democrats, but the party will need to deliver on affordability, corruption and foreign policy to maintain voters’ trust.
