A New Tool Aimed at Solving Synthetic Filmmaking Is Being Unwrapped at Autodesk

The Hollywood Reporter · 2 hours ago

Autodesk Flow Studio, one of Hollywood's favoured AI production tools, is launching a new package called 3D Editor + Canvas that aims to give filmmakers greater control over AI-generated shots. The tool combines standard 2D prompt-based AI generation with 3D manipulation typically reserved for specialist post-production software such as Unreal Engine, addressing a longstanding weakness in AI filmmaking: the difficulty of precisely directing camera angles, depth and character movement within generated scenes.

The system has two components: Canvas, which uses a range of AI models similar to tools from Luma, OpenArt and Runway, and 3D Editor, which lets users manipulate generated images in 360 degrees as though working with real actors on a set. Co-founder Nikola Todorovic, whose company was formerly known as Wonder Dynamics, said the tool can insert AI-generated characters into existing environments or build environments around existing characters, a technique some are calling "performance transfer." The product, unveiled on Tuesday, is offered in an enterprise tier for studios and a lower-cost tier for social media and other content creators; Netflix has separately said it has used generative AI in its productions.
