Aaron Sorkin Says It ‘Never Occurred’ to Him That Jesse Eisenberg Wouldn’t Play Mark Zuckerberg in ‘The Social Reckoning,’ Claims the Paycheck Was a ‘Disincentive’

Variety ·

Aaron Sorkin says he assumed Jesse Eisenberg would reprise Mark Zuckerberg in his 2026 follow-up to *The Social Network*, and was surprised when the actor declined. Eisenberg said he is moving in different directions and does not want to be associated with the character, while stressing that his decision was not a judgement on the film.

Sorkin prepared arguments to persuade Eisenberg, but said a large studio offer was no incentive and might even put him off, because Eisenberg is concerned about raising his children with too much money. Jeremy Strong will play Zuckerberg in *The Social Reckoning*, due in cinemas on 9 October. The original film received eight Oscar nominations and won three; Eisenberg was nominated for his performance.
