Trust Me, I’m a Doctor first look reveals Abbie Cornish as Anna Nicole Smith

Variety · 2 months ago

Variety has published an exclusive first look at "Trust Me, I'm a Doctor", a film in which Australian actress Abbie Cornish plays the late model and reality star Anna Nicole Smith. Written and directed by Thane Economou, the movie is based on the memoir of Dr Sandeep Kapoor, Smith's physician, who was charged with several felonies over prescribing medication to her before her death in 2007 but was acquitted of all charges after a nine-week trial. Co-star Kal Penn, who plays Kapoor, praised Cornish's performance as heartfelt and vulnerable rather than an impersonation or caricature.

The film will be released in cinemas by Tom Ortenberg's Briarcliff Entertainment on 16 October, with producers including Ryan Hawkins, Al Engemann, Rebecca Case and Geenah Krisht. Linda Hamilton appears as Kapoor's lawyer, Ellyn Garofalo, and released stills depict Smith and Kapoor at the 2005 West Hollywood Pride parade — where he faced criticism for allegedly becoming too close to his patient — and a courthouse scene. Penn discussed Kapoor's long-held view, which he first aired in a 2017 Reelz docuseries, that Smith was not an addict but had legitimate pain issues, and reflected on the film's portrayal of the "enablers" in Smith's inner circle.
