Abramorama Acquires ‘Miss Represenation: Rise Up,’ Jennifer Siebel Newsom Documentary About Backlash Against Women In Social Media Age

Deadline · 3 hours ago

Distributor Abramorama has acquired North American rights to Miss Representation: Rise Up, a documentary by director Jennifer Siebel Newsom examining the backlash faced by women amid the rise of artificial intelligence, social media and misogyny. The film, a follow-up to Newsom's 2011 film Miss Representation, will premiere at IFC Center in New York on 22 October before expanding to cinemas across North America, a release pattern that qualifies it for Oscar consideration. The deal comes as scrutiny grows over social media's impact on young people, notably following a $17.1 billion settlement between Meta and state attorneys general over claims it designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive and harmful to youth mental health.

The documentary, which premiered at June's Tribeca Festival, explores what it calls a mental health crisis affecting women's agency, driven by AI deepfakes and online "manosphere" culture. It features contributions from prominent figures including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Amy Klobuchar and actress Jameela Jamil, alongside personal stories from young women pushing back against online misogyny. Newsom, California's First Partner, previously produced acclaimed documentaries including The Invisible War and The Hunting Ground, and founded The Representation Project after her first film's release fifteen years ago.
