Academy Museum Unveils The Horror Show Exhibition Featuring ‘Carrie’ 50th Anniversary Screening, John Carpenter Retrospective

Variety · 2 hours ago

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles has announced a major new exhibition, The Horror Show, devoted to the art and craft of horror cinema. Running for 10 months from 26 September 2026 to 25 July 2027 in the museum's Katzenberg Gallery, it will be accompanied by film retrospectives, including a 50th anniversary screening of "Carrie" attended in person by Sissy Spacek, and a John Carpenter series. The exhibition marks a substantial institutional celebration of a genre often regarded as populist and low-budget.

The show features six themed chambers exploring subjects such as Gothic, Slasher, Ghosts and Religion, displaying rare props, costumes, production materials and interactive exhibits from films including "Get Out", "The Shining", "Midsommar" and "Psycho". Willem Dafoe and Osgood Perkins serve on the advisory team, with curators framing the exhibition as an exploration of horror's emotional and cultural power. Public programmes include an October Monster Mash featuring a 4K restoration of 1958's "Horror of Dracula", a Halloween screening of "The Craft", and a January Hammer films series, alongside a more family-friendly companion exhibit called Zombies!
