A 26-year-old Afghan man appeared in Athens court on August 5 in connection with the death of a Scottish aid worker. Elisabeth Jane Ross, from Edinburgh, was discovered dead inside a suitcase on July 18 at an abandoned location, roughly one week after relatives reported her missing. Sharif Ahmadzai faces charges of homicide with intent, robbery, and weapons offences, with formal charges expected to be filed during the court proceedings.

Ross had travelled to Greece in late June to volunteer with a refugee assistance organisation in Athens, residing in the Piraeus district until mid-July. While initial autopsy findings proved inconclusive, subsequent medical examinations determined she died from asphyxiation in what authorities consider a deliberate criminal act. The hearing was conducted in private.
