Agatha Christie's fictional detective Hercule Poirot is set to return in a new BBC television series, aiming to introduce the century-old character to a new generation of viewers. The show has been described as "an intimate study of Hercule Poirot the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars," drawing on three of Christie's early stories while introducing future allies and a key nemesis.

Poirot first appeared in Christie's 1920 novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles and went on to feature in 33 novels, two plays and more than 50 short stories. The new series, understood to potentially run to three seasons, is being written by Benji Walters, known for Obsession, though full plot details have not yet been revealed. Poirot has a long screen history, having been portrayed by David Suchet on ITV from 1989 to 2013, by Kenneth Branagh in recent films including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, and by John Malkovich in the BBC's The ABC Murders.
