AI titans to tidy agent frontier with plugin prescription

The Register · 15 hours ago

Vercel, Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft and OpenAI have backed Agent Plugins 1.0, a proposed common format for packaging AI-agent tools and skills. The aim is to make these capabilities portable between compatible platforms, reducing the need for developers to rewrite integrations for each agent product.

The specification places a plugin’s manifest, task instructions and MCP server configuration in a standard directory structure. It combines Anthropic’s Agent Skills standard with the Linux Foundation Agentic AI Foundation’s MCP protocol; VS Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Codex and Kiro reportedly support it. The first release is deliberately limited, with optional vendor-specific extensions separated into namespaces, and will be governed openly under a technical oversight committee.

  • Major AI firms back a portable plugin format for agents.
  • Plugins bundle skills and external-tool connections in one structure.
  • Version 1.0 is narrow, with future extensions possible.
