Microsoft's Copilot chatbot suffered a website outage overnight, with copilot.microsoft.com returning a Cloudflare Error 1016 message for an hour and 40 minutes, from 2225 UTC on 9 September to 0005 UTC on 10 September. Separately, a resilience test run by the Microsoft 365 Copilot team caused some users to lose access to Copilot Chat's suggested prompts, or "suggestion pills". Both incidents highlight the everyday fragility behind AI systems often hyped as transformative, offering a wry counterpoint to fears of an AI takeover.

Microsoft said it diagnosed a fault in the affected network flow and applied a configuration fix that fully restored access to the Copilot website. The company also halted its internal resilience drill once it noticed the impact on Copilot Chat's suggestion pills, and said it would review its drill procedures to prevent similar disruption in future. Both issues were resolved by the time of reporting.
