Alderney set to welcome Britain in Bloom judges

BBC Science · 2 hours ago

The island of Alderney is preparing for assessment in the annual Britain in Bloom programme, a Royal Horticultural Society initiative that evaluates communities across the British Isles for their horticultural and environmental efforts. Competing as Guernsey's entry in the coastal division, the island will host judges for a comprehensive three-hour visit scheduled for 29 July.

Members of the local Horticultural Society have spent months developing public spaces across Alderney, including floral installations along main streets, garden displays at transport hubs, and landscaping at civic locations. The judges' itinerary will encompass both cultivated areas and natural heritage sites, including an internationally designated wetland reserve and seabird colony, alongside a recently completed youth education facility focused on wildlife and conservation, reflecting the competition's dual emphasis on horticulture and ecological stewardship.
