Alex Aster on Writing Barbie World’s First-Ever YA Book, Sending Her ‘Lightlark’ Movie Producers ‘Really Smart’ Fan Casts

Variety · 2 hours ago

Author Alex Aster, best known for her bestselling "Lightlark" and "Starside" novels, has released "Barbie Dreamscape," the first-ever young adult book based on Mattel's Barbie franchise. Aster, who has published ten titles in six years, was given creative freedom by Mattel to shape the story and decide which characters from Barbie's world to feature, marking a notable expansion of the decades-old toy brand into the YA fiction market.

The book follows a teenage Barbie whose future is upended when she is declared "Fateless" at her magical school's graduation, sending her on a quest across the lands of Heartland to uncover the truth about destiny. Aster said she deliberately kept Ken as a minor presence so Barbie's journey remained one of self-discovery rather than a relationship-driven story, and drew inspiration for new characters from Barbie's toy lines and animated films. Speaking at the book's release party in New York, she suggested "Dreamscape" could work well as an animated film or as the first live-action YA "Barbie" movie, and separately discussed sending "really smart" fan casting suggestions to producers working on a "Lightlark" film adaptation.
