## Key points

- Texas and California’s fictional alliance is back in focus.
- Democrats’ Texas victories prompted viewers to revisit the film.
- Garland said the states’ common threat explained their partnership.

## Summary

Alex Garland’s 2024 film *Civil War* is drawing renewed attention after Democrats won Texas’s governor’s race and a US Senate seat, prompting viewers to revisit its imagined alliance between Texas and California. The film’s map shows the two states joining forces against a president who has dismantled the Constitution, a premise some viewers previously criticised as unclear.

Social media users have joked that Garland deserves an apology for depicting the alliance, while others argue the film anticipated political upheaval. Garland said the reason for the states’ partnership was implicit: their political differences could be set aside in response to an authoritarian threat. He said he made the film to pull viewers away from political polarisation.
