The shutdown was announced earlier in 2026 when the title was delisted from the eShop, and it matters because affected players have reportedly received no refund, leaving those who paid for the cloud version unable to play or recoup their money.

Switch users were warned via an in-game notice that the game would remain accessible until 5 August 2026 at 23:59 JST, after which the servers would close; that deadline has now passed. While the Switch cloud version is gone for good, digital copies of Fireteam Elite remain playable on other platforms, and IGN has reported that no refunds were offered to Switch owners. The news comes shortly after the announcement that Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 will receive a full release on Switch 2 this autumn.
