Gauff reaches her first Wimbledon singles semi-final

BBC Sport · 2 months ago

Coco Gauff has reached her first Wimbledon singles semi-final, coming from a set down to beat fellow American Jessica Pegula 4-6 6-3 6-3. The result is notable because Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, had never previously passed the fourth round at the All England Club and had gone out in the first round last year, arriving having not won a grass-court singles match since 2024. At 22, she becomes the youngest player to reach the semi-finals at all four Grand Slams since Maria Sharapova in 2007.

After a shaky opening set marred by four double faults and 17 unforced errors, Gauff recovered against the world number four, breaking Pegula's serve and holding her composure to level and then edge ahead. It was the seventh seed's fourth successive three-set win, making her the first woman in 30 years to reach the singles semi-finals via four three-set matches. She will face Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova, who reached her own first Wimbledon semi-final by ending Naomi Osaka's run with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 victory, striking fewer unforced errors (21 to 32) in a high-quality contest. The defeat prolongs Pegula's wait for a maiden Grand Slam singles title.

  • Gauff beats Pegula 4-6 6-3 6-3 for first Wimbledon semi-final.
  • Youngest to make all four Slam semis since Sharapova in 2007.
  • She next faces Karolina Muchova, who beat Naomi Osaka.
