The American Century Championship, one of the highest-profile celebrity golf tournaments in the United States, returns to the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nevada, this week, running from 10 to 12 July. The event draws a star-studded field from across sport and entertainment, including former NHL forward Joe Pavelski, baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz, Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry and country singer Jake Owen, making it a notable fixture in the summer sporting calendar.

The tournament uses a Modified Stableford scoring system, in which players earn points per hole rather than counting total strokes: an albatross is worth 10 points, a hole-in-one eight, an eagle six, a birdie three and a par one, while a bogey scores nothing and anything two over par or worse deducts two points. Last year Pavelski won with 73 points, ahead of Smoltz (64), Owen (62), former USMNT star Taylor Twellman (61) and Curry (58). In an interview with Fox News Digital, Smoltz said his slow first rounds have repeatedly forced him to play catch-up, lamenting that he once made 29 consecutive pars and stressing that birdies, worth three times as much as pars, are key to winning.
