‘American Doctor’ Unveils Trailer, Sets Theatrical Release Date; Award-Winning Film Follows U.S. Physicians Who Treated Children Badly Wounded In Gaza

Deadline · 1 month ago

The documentary American Doctor has released its trailer and confirmed a theatrical release, opening in New York and Toronto on 14 August 2026, in Los Angeles a week later, and in further US cities from 28 August with a wider expansion in September. Directed by Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Poh Si Teng and distributed by Watermelon Pictures, the film follows three American doctors who volunteered in besieged Gaza hospitals, treating Palestinian children severely wounded during Israel's bombardment and invasion. Its release brings a pointed and politically charged account of the conflict to cinemas.

The three physicians — Dr Mark Perlmutter, who is Jewish, Palestinian American Dr Thaer Ahmad, and Pakistani American Dr Feroze Sidhwa — are shown both operating in Gaza and campaigning at home, lobbying Congress and appearing in US media to argue against Israel's killing of civilians, healthcare workers and journalists, and against American military aid to Israel. The film premiered at Sundance and screened at Copenhagen's CPH:DOX, and has won audience awards at the Sydney and Biografilm (Bologna) festivals, plus a Special Mention in CPH:DOX's human rights category. Perlmutter described witnessing what he called the largest paediatric homicide of their lifetimes.
