American Squid Game Spinoff Series Reportedly Canceled at Netflix

IGN · 3 weeks ago

Netflix has reportedly cancelled David Fincher's planned American spinoff of Squid Game, sources close to the project told The Playlist. The show, dubbed "Squid Game: America" and written by Utopia creator Dennis Kenny, had been in development since 2024, but Netflix's ambitions for the franchise have since shifted away from a US remake towards exploring stories set in "individual international markets" instead.

Insiders cited a lengthy production process, executive changes at Netflix, and Fincher's commitment to other projects such as his film The Adventures of Cliff Booth as reasons behind the decision. The series had been listed for a February 2026 shoot in Los Angeles as recently as November 2025, but sources stressed that country-specific spinoffs are not currently in development either. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously confirmed that Season 3 marked the definitive end of the story, despite Cate Blanchett's surprise season finale cameo hinting at other versions of the games existing elsewhere. Netflix has not yet commented publicly.
